A few weeks ago, our head roaster, Quinn finished up and passed his Roaster Pathway Level 1 exam through the Specialty Coffee Association of America. What does this mean?

Besides 100 hours of coffee roasting on our roaster, it includes a lot of classroom time (online plus 5 days at host Swing’s Coffee Roasters), continuing education, and hands on work with coffee. The certification starts with a thorough coffee foundation including vocabulary, history, and chemistry. Coffee education is key with a lot of time spent on the supply chain- farming and harvesting, green coffee selling and contracts, green coffee purchasing and grading. Other areas of study include decaffeinated coffees. From there the classes progress into everything roasting related and coffee profiles.  Thanks to Swing’s for their awesome facilities and learning environment.

Although Quinn has been home roasting for seven years before Peritus Coffee began, there is SO much to learn with coffee and the passing the exam and getting this certification is a big deal for us and lays a really solid foundation. Yay Quinn- nice work!
